  • 8OCT07 - We have finalized the judging courses dates in both north and south California. Level 3/4, 5/6 course will be held on Saturday, October 20th from 3:30 to 9:00 pm at the Newark Library, 6300 Civic Terrace Ave. Newark, CA 94560. Unfortunately, we were not able to find an appropriate location for the 7/8 course, so we will be hosting a 7/8 course in LA instead in conjunction with the 3/4, 5/6 course on November 3 and 4 from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm in Segundo (LAX area). We are now making the final arrangements and will let you know as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience.

The fee to take the course is $25 per person. You have to pay whether you only want to audit or you are planning to take the test. Please feel free to forward this email to anyone who might be interested. Also, feel free to contact me if you have any question regarding the course. Here are the basic criteria for eligibility:

  • 1FEB07 - We need to assign the judges for 4 region 1 championship meets. Please let me know by WEDNESDAY FEB. 7TH which competition you are interested in and available to judge. Also, tell me if you are attending an event with your team but are available to judge levels you are not competing in (if you are an athlete) or have no athlete attending (if you are a coach). Note, that you need a valid pro or junior pro membership and safety certification to be judging at any championship meet. See below for more details about that.

Here are the dates and locations for the meets:
Norcal state 4-10: Fremont, March 17-18
Socal state 4-10: Torrance, March 10-11
Region 1 4-6: La Jolla, April 21-22
Region 1 7-10: Culver city, May 5-6

Final meet assignments and panels will be done by the meet referees and contracts will be handled by the host team.

About junior pro membership and safety certification:
You first need your junior pro membership($55). Your club can get that for you. Once your club has contacted USA Gymnastics membership by phone 1-800-345-4719 and requested your junior pro be added, they can pay for your registration as a renewal on the club membership site. You must have the responsible person for your team membership take care of this by phone first and they must ask to have the information updated from the USA end. Any questions about the registration process can be discussed by phone with the person at USA who is making the update. Once you have your Junior pro member number and password, you can register for safety certification ($65) on line (no more then 2 hours). It is valid for 4 years. You can not judge (OR coach) at a sanctioned meet without official certification.

  • 7DEC06 – Judges, please check the examples of marking artistry on the form 1 and form 2. I wish to thank Nadine for taking the time to produce these, as well as educating all of us on the new format.

  • 4DEC06 – Judges, please check the Course notes from Nadine Davies.

  • 16NOV06 – Region 1 is hosting a level 5/6 course on Saturday Dec. 2nd from 11am to 5pm in San Francisco.

Everybody can attend the course, however only eligible people can take the test (check in rules and policies section 18 or ask if you are not sure). I will also be doing a FIG newsletter 25, 26 and 27 update regarding artistic value.

Here is a preliminary schedule:

  • 11am - 2:30 pm level 5/6 course
  • 2:30pm - 4:00 pm newsletter updates
  • 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm level 5/6 test

Please note: coaches are also encouraged and welcome to take the 5/6 course (and not the test) for the course fee of $25. For those of you taking the test, you should know the material in the JO handbook (with the revisions from this year) and have looked at the JO study guide. Both of these can be downloaded from the USAG website at http://www.usa-gymnastics.org/rhythmic/

The course will be held at: Russian Center of San Francisco, 2450 Sutter Street, San Francisco, CA 94115. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

  • 15NOV06 – Judges please remember to Fax your judges log to 408-952-3810, so we can track your participation and development.

Regards, Pauline Bolte

  • 06NOV06 – Andrea Schmid just returned from Geneva. Below is what she found out.

1. There will be another newsletter coming out in the next few weeks with more clarifications and some symbols as well.

2. Cat leap may only be done once.

3. Bodywave can be any body wave, not just the flexibility difficulties.

4. Fouette clarification - if you start with your leg out you must end with your leg out, if you start with the passe then you must end with the passe. Basically, whichever technique you decide to use you must start and finish the same way.

5. The table may be added both vertically and horizontally.

When I go to Japan, I hope to get more information as well, and will pass along when I return.

Thanks, Nadine Davies

  • 23OCT06 – For those of you attending the course(s) this week-end and taking the test, I strongly encourage you to download the JO study guide. You will find example of test questions that will help you to prepare for the test. Please remember that you should know most of the material (JO handbook) before you come to the course.

Regards, Pauline Bolte

  • 19OCT06 – Here is a more detailed schedule (from the few answers we got):

Saturday 10/28 - level 7/8 course and test
9am - 5 pm, Matsui room at the El Segundo Public Library
111 W. Mariposa Avenue, El Segundo, CA 90245

Sunday 10/29 - level 5/6 course and test
    12pm - 5pm, LASG.

The fee for either course is only $25 as the region is sponsoring this event. For level 7/8 we will also go over newsletter 25 and 26. Anybody is free to attend; however only eligible people can test and please let me know if you are planning to test so we have everything handy. If you are not sure of your eligibility, feel free to contact me. As a reminder, if you can take the national test (national team member, national team coach, or east/west coach) you are by default able to take the level 7/8 test.

Regards, Pauline Bolte

  • 05OCT06 – Region 1 pro members and friends,
Please read the following message regarding judges courses in SoCal October 28 & 29. This year Region 1 will be asking a $25 fee for attending any or all of the courses offered. There well be no test fee. Jody

Region 1 is planning a JO course in Los Angeles on the week-end of Oct. 28/29. We are thinking of having 2 levels (either 3/4 or 5/6, 7/8). We need to know who would like to attend and at what level by Oct. 15. Also, the national congress will be held in California in 2007 and I would encourage gymnasts/coaches eligible to take the national course to become level 8 judges beforehand to gain some experience throughout the year. Feel free to forward this invitation to people interested in taking the course. We may be offering a level 3/4 or 5/6 course in the bay area, depending on the demand, but the date is not fixed yet. We would still like to know who would be interested in attending and for what level. Please review the Rules and Policies to check if you are eligible to move up and feel free to contact me if you are not sure.

Here is the important part. Judges must progress from level to level as rated officials.

1. All new prospective judges must begin at Level 3/4.

2. Artistic judges with a current Level 5 and up rating may begin at Level 5/6.

3. A rhythmic coach who has coached a gymnast to the J.O. Championships (Individual) may begin at Level 7/8.

4. Rhythmic athletes who are 16 years of age and have qualified to compete in Eastern/Western Qualifiers Championships may begin at Level 5/6.

5. Level 8 athletes recommended by their coaches that are age 16 may participate in a course to become certified as a Level 3/4 judge. These judges must obtain an instructor membership with USAG and Safety Certification.

6. All judges under the age of 18 must obtain a junior professional membership with USAG and safety certification. At Championships these judges will be allowed to judge when averaging their score with a professional judge to gain experience and fulfill their move-up requirements. These judges, after fulfilling move-up requirements, may take a course and test to advance to Level 7/8.

In order to gain admission to the National Course to be certified, a potential candidate must either/or:

1. Be 18 yrs of age and have been a member of the USA National Team.

2. Have been a coach of an athlete who has competed at Rhythmic Eastern, Rhythmic Western, Nationals or Challenge, within the past five (5) years.

3. Have gone through the judging progression as outlined in the Rules & Policies.
